Danish eateries Noma and Geranium came first and second on the 2021 World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards. Announced on Tuesday, the awards, considered as the Oscars of gastronomy, included three New York City based restaurants, three from Hong Kong and two based in Mexico City. There was an Indian connection in the list too.

While no Indian restaurant was named directly in the list, No. 20 DiverXO, a Madrid-based eatery, serves an Indian cuisine. Led by chef Dabiz Munoz, the Spanish outlet serves a 12-course menu inspired by the cuisines of Asia. One of the dishes is inspired by Goa. Munoz has prepared a dish named ‘Galician lobster waking up on the beaches of Goa’ which features a lobster head vindaloo cooked using Tandoori cooking processes and complemented with sushi rice.

“No trip to Noma is ever the same,” the citation said.

The list features restaurants from 26 countries and territories across the world.

The third best restaurant in the world is Asador Etxebarri located in Atxondo, Spain.

Two Indian restaurants featured in the list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. Delhi’s Indian Accent is at number 18, while Masque, Mumbai is at number 32 in the list.

A 2019 rule prevents previous winners, including Eleven Madison Park in New York, Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck in Bray, UK, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, and Mirazur in Menton, France, from competing, but Noma qualified because it closed in 2016.
