Manchester United sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid
- Manchester United confirmed the signing of Rafael Varane on Tuesday
- Varane is World Cup-winner and a four-time Champions League winner
- The English club haven't announced the details of the transfer
Although the English club hasn't yet announced the details of the transfer, including the wage and transfer fee, they announced the signing on their official website, saying, "Manchester United is delighted to announce the club has reached agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of French international defender and World Cup winner, Raphael Varane, subject to a medical and to player terms being finalised."
The French centre-back is a four-time Champions League winner, three-time La Liga champion and was part of the FIFA World XI in 2018. With Varane, partnered by Harry Maguire, the Red Devils' backline could seemingly recover the stability they had hoped for all these years.
In this summer's transfer window, Manchester United have been mighty proactive as they have already acquired two massive additions to their roster. Earlier in the month, they signed English winger Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund to bolster their attacking department.
In 2011, Varane signed for Real Madrid from French club RC Lens for a fee of around 10 million euros at the age of 18. Under manager Jose Mourinho, Varane eventually broke into the Real Madrid starting XI unseating Portuguese defender Pepe.
Soon he became a mainstay of the Real Madrid backline and formed a lethal partnership with Sergio Ramos. In his 10 year stay at Los Blancos, Varane won 18 titles: 4 Champions League, 4 Club World Cups, 3 UEFA Super Cups, 3 La Liga titles, 1 Copa del Rey and 3 Spanish Super Cups.
And in 2018, he reached the pinnacle of his career, when he won the Champions League and a few months later, won the FIFA World Cup.
Although since the last few seasons, Varane performance hasn't been at the highest level, on his day he is still one of the finest centre-backs on the planet.
Meanwhile, for the fans of the Spanish giants, the transfer comes as a huge blow as the club has now transferred out their two leading centre-backs - Ramos and Varane - in a matter of weeks. The Spanish centre-back went to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer at the starting of July.
