- NCB raided a cruise ship party off the Mumbai coast on Saturday
- The anti-drugs agency found illegal drugs being consumed at a party on the cruise
- A Bollywood actor’s son is said to be among those detained, media reports say
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) carried out a raid at a cruise ship off the coast of Mumbai on Saturday and detained at least 10 people, according to news agency ANI. Children of prominent Bollywood actors are being investigated; NCB officials told ANI adding that the anti-drugs agency seized banned substances being consumed at a party on board the ship.
Sameer Wankhede, zonal director of NCB, Mumbai, said, “We’ve intercepted some persons. The probe is underway. Drugs have been recovered. We’re investigating 8–10 persons.” Upon being asked if there was any celebrity present at the party, Wankhede said, “I can’t comment on it”.
Those detained will be brought back to Mumbai on Sunday. “So far no arrest has been made by us,” Wankhede said.
Saturday’s raid took place on Cordelia Cruises’ Empress ship, inaugurated two weeks ago. NCB officials had entered the cruise ship undercover, disguised as passengers. Once the ship had left the coast of Mumbai, a rave party started, according to India Today. Consequently, NCB officials swung into action and detained a number of individuals seen consuming illegal drugs openly.
Media reports indicate that those detained could be booked under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and produced before a court on Sunday.
The Narcotics Control Bureau has been working on several high-profile anti-drugs cases since last year. One of the big cases it has been handling including includes a chargesheet over an alleged ‘drugs syndicate’ that named 33 people, including actor Rhea Chakraborty, related to the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
