Italian Mafia fugitive Marc Feren
Claude Biart, who had been on the run since 2014, was arrested by Interpol on March 24 through
a unique turn of events. 53-year-old Biart, Italian-Dutch in
origin, accused of drug trafficking, was caught after officers came across his
Italian cooking videos on YouTube.

Living the ideal tourist-life in
the town of Boca Chica near San Domingo, the capital of Dominican Republic, Biart
was traced down by the police through his tattoos, with none of the videos ever
featuring his face, as per a report by CNN.

“The love for Italian cuisine
allowed (police forces) to follow his traces on the web and social networks,
while the love for tattoos (allowed police) to recognize the fugitive as that
cook”, CNN quoted a statement by Italy’s financial police as reading.

He was accused of drug trafficking
for the Cacciola clan of the ‘Ndrangheta, a organised crime syndicate, between
Italy and Netherlands.

Known in Boca Chica simply as
Marc, Biart was particularly careful, not revealing his face in the videos as
well as leading a cautious lifestyle.

Reportedly, the Italian moved to
Dominican Republic five years ago. Before that, he had lived in Costa Rica as
well.

The ‘Ndrangheta, for which Biart
operated, is present in at least 32 nations across the world, with 17 of them falling
under Europe.

His arrest is part of Interpol’s ‘Ndrangheta
(I-CAN) project, directly funded by Italy, involving 10 countries around the
world.
