In some of the recent press briefings at the White House, reporters relayed questions to press secretary Jen Psaki on behalf of fellow reporter Kacey Montagu, who couldn’t be there due to COVID-19 protocols. Turns out, their colleague doesn’t exist, at least as a journalist, reported Politico on Thursday.

The person, who goes by the name Kacey Montagu, is actually a gamer on the digital platform ROBLOX.  Montagu was faking their identity since last year. They presented themselves as a White House correspondent, who worked for a fictitious media outlet, named White House News, shortened in emails to WHN.

Montagu made two real-life Twitter handles, ‘WH Schedule’ and ‘WH Pool Report’, that are even followed by top White House officials and journalists. They acquired Psaki and national security adviser Jake Sullivan’s personal financial disclosure forms through her Freedom of Information Act requests.

In other communications, the fake journalist claimed to be a Daily Mail reporter as well. Montagu has had several exchanges with White House officials but they are only a digital impersonation of a correspondent.

When Politico reached out to Montagu to know why they were posing as a White House reporter, they said, “I love journalism, and I think the Press Corps is doing a pretty bad job at the moment, so I decided I would ensure some transparency and ask some questions me and some friends wanted the answer to.”

Montagu’s old LinkedIn profile and Google-hosted profile page are now unavailable, while their two Twitter accounts have been suspended.
