To mark the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, a wedding bun was thrown during the national celebrations in 1981. The bun has been preserved with a coat of varnish and bears the label “Abingdon Bun Throwing 29th July 1981, Wedding of Prince of Wales”, BBC reported.

The bun, sold to a mystery bidder for £15, came from a house clearance, said Hanson Auctioneers. Valuer Jasper Marsh said it would now be “preserved for the nation”.

“It’s not destined for the breakfast table,” BBC quoted Marsh as saying about the Charles and Diana wedding bun.

“It’s gone to a good home and will be preserved for the nation.”

Marsh said that although it was not known who owned the bun originally, but said that it could’ve been someone who is connected to the 400-year-old tradition in Abington-on-Thames.

Bun throwing is one of several ancient traditions of Abingdon-on-Thames.

As per BBC, the event is an amalgamation of a ceremony and a bun fight. The ceremony, organised by the town council, are usually associated with royal events. They are often held as a gesture of loyalty and goodwill toward the monarch.

Some 4,500 currant buns were thrown from the roof of the county hall in June 2016 to mark the Queen‘s 90th birthday.

The last one took place in 2018, as a commemoration of the end of the First World War.

The wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer happened on July 29, 1981, at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, Alan Webster, presided at the service while the archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, conducted the marriage.

The wedding was attended by members of other royal families, republican heads of state, and members of the bride’s and groom’s families among others. The UK had a national holiday to mark the wedding.

The marriage was touted as a “fairytale wedding” and the “wedding of the century and was watched by an estimated global audience of 750 million people, media reports say.

After a tumultuous period in their 15 years of marriage, the couple separated in 1992 and divorced four years later.
