An American man, who was one of three people who died at a resort in the Bahamas after falling ill on Friday, was celebrating his anniversary, his son told ABC, adding that his mother survived and is in stable condition.

On Friday evening, three American tourists were found dead at the Sandals Emerald Bay in Exuma and another was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

Speaking to ABC, Austin Chiarella confirmed his father, Vincent Chiarella, was among the dead. 

“I am just so heartbroken right now.  dad was everything to me,” Austin told the outlet. 

His mother, Donnis Chiarealla, was expected to be airlifted to Kendall Regional facility in Florida.

Describing his mother’s experience, he said, “She woke up and my dad was laying there on the floor, and she couldn’t move. Her legs and arms was swollen and she couldn’t move and she screamed to get someone to come in the door.”

He added that his mother called him before the incident and said that she went to the clinic after feeling sick on Thursday. She “thought she was alright” after being released from the clinic, he said. 

Bahamas Minister of Health & Wellness Dr. Michael Darville has described it as an “isolated incident” and said that an investigation was ongoing.

“There’s no potential risk to any of the residents on Exuma as well as residents at the resort or any other resort on the on Exuma,” he said.

The resort has issued a statement saying, “A health emergency was initially reported and following our protocols we immediately alerted emergency medical professionals and relevant local authorities. Out of respect for the privacy of our guests, we cannot disclose further information at this time.”
