The 17 days of the Tokyo Olympics may have zoomed past sports lovers, who will now sit in anticipation of the next Summer Games. France's capital city Paris is all set to host the international games in 2024.
Paris was shortlisted as the host for the next Summer Games on September 13, 2017. Shortly after the host city was decided, the duration of the Paris Olympics was scheduled. The sporting event will commence on July 26, 2024 and will last about 16 days, ending on August 11.
Paris was in a race with five other prominent cities that wanted to secure the chance to host the next Olympic games. The full list of the contenders included four European cities while one was in the United States. Budapest (Hungary), Paris (France), Hamburg (Germany), Rome (Italy) and Los Angeles (United States) were in the race.
While a few competitors pulled out of the race due to various reasons Paris was granted the opportunity. Los Angeles was also confirmed as the host for the games after that, which will be held in 2028.
In an interview with the French sports daily L'Equipe to appear on Sunday, President Emmanuel Macron revealed that barges on the Seine and its quays would provide the urban setting for the ceremony on July 26, 2024.
"We want it to be a ceremony of the people, open to all and unique in terms of the experience it will provide. Something that makes sense to the French people and conveys a message to the rest of the world," the 43-year-old leader said in Tokyo on the sidelines of the delayed 2020 Games, news agency AFP reported.
Paris Olympics will also see an event reshuffle as a few sports will be added while some will be omitted. In June 2019, breakdancing was approved by the International Olympic Committee, while kiteboarding was added earlier this year.
Baseball, softball and karate will not be a part of the Olympic programme in 2024, according to media reports.
