- Arsenal are placed fifth on the Premier League table
Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed from a yard of the goal post against New Castle in Saturday's Premier League game at the Emirates Stadium. The hosts took the lead with Bukayo Saka's 56th minute goal that was followed by Gabriel Martinelli's effort 10 minutes later. The Gunners won 2-0.
Coming down the left flank in the 41st minute, Saka delivered a cross to Smith Rowe. The attacking midfielder powered a header at the goal, which was saved by New Castle's goalkeeper Martin Dubravka only to rebound towards Aubameyang. The Gunners striker, who was in a great position at back post to finish off the sitter, somehow managed to miss the shot unchallenged from a yard.
Arsenal and New Castle stood at a deadlock at half-time.
It was 10 minutes into the second half that Saka delivered a low left-footed effort to drill the ball past Dubravka and take the hosts 1-0 up. In the 66th minute, Martinelli guided Tomiyasu's delivery into the left corner of the net to double the advantage.
Aubameyang, who didn't have the best of the games, was substituted by Aexandre Lacazette soon after he received a yellow card. The 32-year-old had four goals from 11 matches in the Premier League heading into the clash against Newcastle.
With the win, Arsenal are fifth on the Premier League table with 23 points, two shy of third-placed Liverpool. Newcastle, on the other hand, remain the only winless club in the top four divisions. They are rooted to the bottom of the English top-flight.
