Varun Dhawan and Natasha Dalal recently tied the knot in an intimate gathering. Many celebrities took to their social media accounts to share their best wishes for the new couple. However, the Kannada actor Shraddha Srinath did not wish them in the ordinary, customary way. She added a bittersweet sarcasm to her post that has created a buzz.
In her Instagram post wishing Dalal and Dhawan, she took a jab at patriarchy by directing a message to Dhawan that usually female actors receive after their marriages.
She said, “Another good actor bites the dust. Sad that we will not see him on screen again. Obviously, his wife and in laws will not be okay with him acting with other heroines. Maybe he will switch to doing male-oriented films? But how to balance personal life and work-life ya. Tough. Will miss him. Congratulations though, Varun (sic)"
This is a response that female actors receive in the movie industry after they get married. Many popular actors had to halt their careers because of this sentiment among people that women won't be as popular after their marriages. Many times, they even get dropped off from movies due to the same reason.
Marriage works very differently for men and women. While most popular male actors in the country have always have been and that never affected their careers, women actors of the same age would face discrimination due to their marital status. It would be very difficult for them to find jobs once married.
It was probably this disparity in treatment of male and female actors that urged her to take a sarcastic dig at Dhawan's wedding. However, it did not sit well with some of Dhawan's fans. Today, Srinath put out another status on Instagram, clarifying that she was only trying to point out the absurdity of the entire establishment that treats married men and women differently.
Shraddha Srinath is an actor who mainly appears in Kannada film though her debut film was Malayali. She gained acclaim for her Kannada movie, Uturn.
