Sending the skateboarding fraternity in frenzy, 12-year-old Gui Khury dropped a 1080-degree in X Games Vert Best Trick competition to become the youngest gold medalist in X Games history, in Vista, California on Friday.

Creating history, Khury became the first skater to land the trick, which is considered the “Holy Grail” of skateboarding, on a vert (non-mega) ramp. Competing against the young man was skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, 53, who embraced Khury as he broke into tears.

He beat eight other competitors in the Vert Best Trick contest including the Hawk who was competing at the games for the first time since 2003. The veteran’s name came in as a surprise addition to the start list.

Khury, on the Day 3 of the competition, dropped down the vert ramp, gained some air and then let physics take over as he rotated 1080 degrees in the air.

While there were no spectators at this year’s Summer X Games owing to COVID-19, the Brazilian can be sure that skateboarding fans across the globe were glued to their TV sets.

In 1999, Tony Hawk, created history when he became the world’s first skateboarder to land a 900 on a vert ramp at X Games after 10 failed attempts.

But on Friday, Hawk didn’t land a 900, though he more than proved he’s still got it with an impressive full Cab backside 540.

Hawk’s last X Games medal came in L.A. in 2003, when he won Vert Best Trick. To put things into perspective, Khury wouldn’t be born for another six years.

Earlier in the day, the Brazilian starlet also dropped a 900 in the skateboard vert contest.

In May 2020, at age 11, Khury was the first skater ever to land a 1080 on a traditional competition-size vert ramp.

Brighton Zeuner previously had the record for youngest gold medalist at the X Games after winning in 2017.
