A lot of firsts for Bangladesh – first win against New Zealand, first on Kiwi soil, first against a top five ranked side and their first victory outside Asia. Mominul Haque and company defeated Tom  Latham’s men by eight wickets at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on Wednesday.

On the other hand, the loss ends New Zealand’s eight-match winning streak and 17-match unbeaten run at home. 

On Day 5, Bangladesh removed five Kiwi batsmen for 22 runs, setting themselves a 40-run target for a historic win. It was a former volleyball player, Ebadot Hossain and Taskin Ahmed (3-36), who ripped through the host’s lineup. The former finished with innings figure of 6/46.

Coming into the game, Hossain had a bowling average of 81.54 from 10 Tests. He had been playing cricket for five years. However, at the Bay Oval, he single-handedly reduced the Black Caps to 5-147 at stumps on day four. The 27-year-old completed his maiden five-wicket haul with Ross Taylor’s wicket on day five. 

The Bangla Tigers had not won any of their last 43 matches in New Zealand across formats. 

Ebadot Hossain was named the player of the match.

“We have come here for the last 11 years and not won a game. When we came this time, we set a goal and we said to ourselves we can do it. New Zealand are Test Champions and if we beat them then it will inspire the next generation to do the same. I have been working hard with Ottis Gibson.”

“The conditions are too flat in Bangladesh and we are still learning how to bowl away from home. I am a soldier of Bangladesh and know how to celebrate. My journey from volleyball to cricket is a long story. I am enjoying my cricket,” he said. 

In the first innings, New Zealand rode on Devon Conway’s 122 to reach 328 runs. In response, skipper Mominul Haque (88), Liton Das (86) and Mahmudul Joy (78) took the visitors to 458.
