Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi and Brighton full-back Tariq Lamptey may choose to represent Ghana instead of England in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, reports suggest.

According to Goal.com, the Ghana Football Association is looking to convince the England-born duo to represent the Black Stars in the World Cup this winter.

“If it is that we wake up tomorrow and the new coach of the Black Stars wants Tariq [Lamptey], Hudson-Odoi, whoever is available, we will look at the regulations and the possibility of getting them. If it is within our reach, we pursue it,” Goal.com quoted Ghana FA communications director Henry Asante Twum as telling Citi TV.

“The new law for nationality switch is that you should be three years from your last game [from the association you want to switch from], so it means that if today, Hudson-Odoi played for England three years ago, we will look at the month [in which] he played, and if it is exactly two years, he has every right to switch nationality,” Twum further said.

Indeed, the 21-year-old Chelsea winger featured for England last in 2019, so is legally eligible to switch his international allegiance ahead of the 2022 World Cup, which begins on November 21.

Additionally, Hudson-Odoi and his parents had held meetings with Ghana’s technical director, as well as Newcastle boss Chris Hughton earlier this year to discuss his international future, all of which adds to speculation about his potential switch.

Lamptey, meanwhile, has yet to feature for England in a senior game, although he has played for the U-21 squad of the Three Lions on two separate occasions.

If the England-born duo choose to represent Ghana, their Premier League experience would go a long way in helping the Black Stars strengthen their squad as they look to take on former foes Uruguay in the group stage of the tournament.
