Prasidh Krishna finished with career-best figures, helping India beat the West Indies by 44 runs and take an unassailable 2-0 lead  in the ongoing three-match ODI series at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday.

The win marks the 11th consecutive bilateral series victory for India over the Caribbean side – the joint-longest winning streak for a team against a particular opposition. Pakistan also have 11 consecutive series wins against Zimbabwe.  It also marks Rohit Sharma’s first series win as captain.

Playing his sixth ODI, Krishna was named Player of the Match for his figures of four wickets for just 12 runs from nine overs. It was the third-cheapest haul with four wickets or more for Indian pacers in ODIs.

Chasing a 238-run target, the Windies failed to get any partnerships going as the Indian bowlers maintained disciple in their line and length while Sharma’s attacking field placing from the off kept pressure on the visitors.

After a decent start, Brandon King (18) was the first to fall as he nicked a short and wide delivery from Krishna for Rishabh Pant to catch behind the stumps.

Sharma’s exceptional success with the DRS continued in the second ODI, overturning a not out decision for a caught behind for Darren Bravo (1) to give India, and Krishna, the second breakthrough.

Sharmarh Brooks (44) was the top-scorer for the Windies, while Akeal Hosein (34) and Odean Smith’s (24) enterprising innings kept the visitors in the game towards the end.

Shardul Thakur took two wickets, along with one each for Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar and Deepak Hooda as the Indian bowlers proved to be the match-winners for a second game running.

Earlier, after losing the toss and being put in to bat, India were in a dire situation at 43 for the loss of three when Virat Kohli (18) departed shortly after the dismissals of skipper Sharma (5) and his opening partner Pant (18).

Suryakumar Yadav (64) stabilised the inning with his second ODI fifty, sharing a 91-run stand for the fourth wicket with KL Rahul (49). The Lucknow Super Giants skipper narrowly missed out on a much-deserved fifty as he was run out following a mix-up with Yadav.

Washington Sundar (24) and Deepak Hooda (29) made handy contributions to help India get to a respectable total.

The third and final ODI will be played on Friday, February 11.
