India pulled off a record run-chase in a thrilling final session to breach the Gabba fortress and hand Australia a three-wicket defeat to clinch the four-match Test series 2-1 on Tuesday. This is also the home team’s first defeat at the Gabba since 1988.
Rishabh Pant starred with a swashbuckling 89 not out as the injury-depleted visitors overhauled the 328-run target with three overs to go, winning by three wickets. It was Shubman Gill’s stylish 91 in the morning session that set the tone for the match and showed the Indian side that they can win the match. Following Gill’s dismissal, Cheteshwar Pujara scored an important fifty to keep the visitors in the hunt. However, after losing a few wickets in the middle, India’s ship was steadied by a 50-plus-run partnership between Pant and Washington Sundar to bring India closer to the target.
Even though Australia was chipping away at the wickets, India stood tall and controlled the game to their tunes. It wasn’t long when Pant switched gears and gave India a memorable victory at the Gabba.
