England and USA shared points as they played out a goalless draw in their second Group B match of the FIFA World Cup at the Al Bayt Stadium on Friday. Before halftime, the United States came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 33rd minute by Christian Pulisic’s left-footed shot from the edge of the area cannoned off the bar as the Americans enjoyed a purple patch at the end of the half. Captain Harry Kane had England’s best chance in the 10th minute but his shot was blocked.

The United States defeated England 1-0 on June 29, 1950, in a group match of the 1950 FIFA World Cup at Estádio Independência in Brazil. The brave but inexperienced US squad was lined up against powerhouse England in the World Cup. The result is one of the biggest upsets in the tournament’s history. Boosted by the world-class showing by the US goalkeeper Frank Borghi and a clean finish by Haitian-born US centre forward Joe Gaetjens. It is also the only time the US men’s national team have beaten England.
The two teams have since faced each other on 10 other occasions. Each one, except for a 2-0 USA win in a 1993 friendly match and a 1-1 draw in the 2010 World Cup, has ended with the Three Lions on top.

In the 2010 World Cup, the USA won 1-0 thanks to a mistake by Robert Green and earned a point to win the group. England dominated the first half of the match and got off to a quick lead when an unmarked Steven Gerrard made a run into the box and beat US goalkeeper Tim Howard in the fourth minute with the outside of his right foot. The US equalized in the 40th minute when a seemingly harmless shot by Clint Dempsy was mishandled by England goalkeeper Robert Green and rolled into the net.
