Mary Hanna represented Australia at five Olympic Games in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2012 and 2016. She competed in the Dressage Individual Grand Prix Qualifier at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, becoming the oldest competitor in the Games at 66 years.
Hanna is a member of Dressage Geelong and has a scholarship with the Victorian Institute of Sport. Hanna represents Australia in dressage, one of the three equestrian disciplines that are the only Olympic events that do not differentiate on the basis of gender.
The grandmother of four was 54 years older than Tokyo Olympics’ youngest competitor, 12 years old Syrian table tennis player Hend Zaza.
Hanna has been coached by Kyra Kyrklund and Clemens Dierks since 1996. She finished 24th in the individual event of 1996 Olympics. In 2000, she finished 34th in the individual event and sixth in the team event. In 2004, she finished 39th in the individual event. In 2012, she finished 43rd in the individual event and ninth in the team event. She was the last Australian competitor to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Hanna finished 15th at 2014 FEI World Cup Dressage Final in Lyon, France. At the 2014 World Equestrian Games held in Normandy, Hanna finished 10th in team dressage and 29th in individual dressage.
She was placed 9th in the team and 39th in the individual dressage competitions at at the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
