On March 19, 1972, US envoy William Stoltzfus met with Qatari government officials and submitted his credentials, establishing diplomatic relations. Since the inauguration of the US embassy in Doha in March 1973, bilateral relations between the two countries have grown. In July 1974, the first resident US ambassador arrived. Qatar and the United States work closely together on Middle Eastern regional diplomatic measures to improve Persian Gulf security. Both countries have extensive economic ties, particularly in the hydrocarbons sector. To serve the Middle Eastern market, Qatar has also established international educational institutions in the region. Qatar also has an American military base.

The first meeting of the US-Qatar Strategic Dialogue was held on January 30, 2018, and was co-chaired by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Khalid al-Attiyah, and Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. The meeting stressed the importance of resolving the problem as soon as possible while respecting Qatar’s sovereignty. The United States stated its willingness to deter and confront any foreign challenge to Qatar’s territorial integrity in a Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation. Qatar has volunteered to contribute to the expansion of infrastructure at US bases in Qatar.
