Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit the 24th half-century of his IPL career in just 38 balls as Chennai Super Kings took on Kolkata Knight Riders at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium on March 26. Dhoni came in to bat when the side was struggling at 61/5 in 10.5 overs and went on to hit 7 boundaries and a six. KKR, however, won the game by 6 wickets.
Ahead of the 15th season of the Indian Premier League, Dhoni stepped down from the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings and Ravindra Jadeja was announced as the new leader of the team.
“MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team,” CSK’s statement read at the time.
“Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond,” the statement added.
However, after the side lost six out of its eight matches, Jadeja “relinquished” captaincy and handed it back to Dhoni.
“Ravindra Jadeja has decided to relinquish captaincy to focus and concentrate more on his game & has requested MS Dhoni to lead CSK. MS Dhoni has accepted to lead CSK in the larger interest & to allow Jadeja to focus on his game,” CSK said in a statement.

Jadeja’s own game was suffering due to the pressure that comes with leadership responsibility as he scored only 112 runs and taken five wickets in the first eight game.
“I think Jadeja knew last season he’d be captaining this year. For the first two games, I oversaw his work and let him be later. After that, I insisted he’d take his own decisions and responsibility for them. Once you become captain, it means a lot of demands come in. But it affected his mind as the tasks grew. I think captaincy burdened his prep and performances,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony after win against SRH.
