Manchester United are reportedly getting Antony from Ajax for €100 million, setting a record transfer fee for the Dutch league.

While all eyes will be on the 22-year-old Brazilian winger to live up to the price tag, here’s a look at some of the records this deal has made.

Most expensive Eredivisie player

Antony’s sale for €100 million also makes him the most expensive Eredivisie player. He joined Ajax from Sao Paolo FC and has amazed in the Dutch league and Champions League.

The second and third most expensive players are also Ajax alums – Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, respectively.

Record sale for Ajax

Antony’s transfer sets a new record for Ajax. The Dutch side’s most expensive transfer, thus far, had been Matthijs de Ligt, who moved to Juventus on a €75 million deal and then to Bayern Munich for €80 million.

The 23-year-old is currently one of the world’s highest-rated defenders and has had notable performances for Ajax, managed to win the Serie A during his Juventus debut, and has a solid presence in the Bavarian team as well.

United’s second most expensive buy

United kept upping the offer for Antony until the Dutch side accepted. Currently, his deal is €10 million short of the most expensive transfer the Red Devils made, when they got Frenchman Paul Pogba from Juventus.

However, the box-to-box midfielder didn’t have much of an impact, playing for the Old Trafford side, save the occasional eyebrow-raising goal. He’s rejoined his Italian team after what many would consider a waste of €110 million.

Antony, hopefully, will be worth what the club is paying, but going by Lisandro Martinez’s performance, one can have some confidence in United coach Erik ten Hag’s asks.

Third most expensive Brazilian player of all time

The Antony deal also makes him the third most expensive Brazilian of all time after Neymar and Coutinho

The 30-year-old winger made a mark in Barcelona, playing with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez as the deadly trio often bamboozled defenders in La Liga. Then, he moved to PSG on a record €222 million transfer and again plays alongside his former teammate Messi. Despite an extremely promising start, Neymar’s spark has somewhat fizzled out, though the Brazilian continues to rack up goals in Ligue 1.

The second most expensive player from the nation is Brazil’s own little magician, Philippe Coutinho, who managed to make a mark in Liverpool and eventually moved to Barcelona for €135 million. This was a record transfer for the Anfield side, but Coutinho didn’t quite fit into the La Liga team and did a spell at Bayern Munich, on a loan, where he was far from his old impressive self.

He’s now returned to Aston Villa, where he was on a loan until recently completing a transfer after a successful season. There, he’s playing under former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and the coach has always had a good word to say for the 30-year-old forward.
