Mumbai Indians’ Dewald Brevis on Wednesday justified all the hype around him by hitting Punjab Kings’ Rahul Chahar for four humongous sixes in one over. The 18-year-old was ultimately dismissed for 49 runs off 25 ball at the MCA Stadium, Pune.
Brevis, who is 18 years old, is referred to as Baby AB – after AB de Villiers, one of the best batsmen cricket has seen. Against PBKS, chasing 199 runs, the South African turned beast when leg-spinner Rahul Chahar came on to bowl the ninth over.
Relive the over:
8.1: Tilak Varma inside-edged Chahar towards square leg for a single.
8.2: Chahar went with a shortish ball. Brevis smashed it past the bowler with brute force for a boundary.
8.3: Dewald Brevis deposited Rahul Chahar’s floated delivery over long-on for a clean six.
8.4: Brevis went down on a knee and did an AB de Villiers – smoking the ball over wide long-on for an even bigger six.
8.5: The 18-year-old brought up the hattrick of sixes by slamming Chahar’s quicker ball over deep mid-wicket for six.
8.6: Dewald Brevis hit the last ball, a loopy leg-spinner, over long on
The over went for 29 runs and the required run rate that was touching 11 at one point dropped to below 9.
Tilak Varma, on the other end, kicked off the next over by top-edging Vaibhav Arora for a boundary over the wicketkeeper’s head. The MI batsman then smashed the fifth ball of the 10th over for a six.
Just when the two were taking the game away from PBKS, Odean Smith got Mayank Agarwal a wicket. On the last ball of the 12th over, Dewald Brevis, who was on 49, miscued a pull and Arshdeep Singh gobbled a catch at deep backward square leg. The South African finished his innings with four boundaries and five sixes.
