Holders Bayern
Munich recorded their 15th consecutive Champions League win on
Wednesday, swatting aside RB Salzburg 3-1 to secure their place in the round of
16, joining Manchester City, as Liverpool were beaten at Anfield by Atalanta and
Real Madrid piled further pressure on Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte with a 2-0
win at San Siro.

With the football
world mourning the loss of Argentine great Diego Maradona and clubs observing a
minute’s silence before kick-off, Bayern extended their record winning streak
in the competition as striker Robert Lewandowski scored the opener to equal Real
Madrid legend Raul’s tally of 71 Champions League goals.

Only
Cristiano Ronaldo (131) and Lionel Messi (118) have more goals in the competition
than the Polish striker.

Kingsley
Coman scored the second and set up Leroy Sane’s header for Bayern’s third, with
Mergim Berisha scoring a late consolation for the Austrian side. Midfielder
Marc Roca was shown the red card for Bayern, but the German champions have
maximum points from the four games so far and are assured of a place in the
last 16.

Meanwhile,
Atletico Madrid had a goal ruled out for offside and were held at home to a goalless
stalemate by Lokomotiv Moscow. Diego Simeone’s side have collected just five
points from four games with all three teams in the group still with a chance to
grab the second qualifying berth.

Earlier, Manchester
City progressed to the knockout rounds with a 1-0 win over Olympiacos, as Phil
Foden converted from a Raheem Sterling backheel to secure their fourth win from
four matches.

However, their
conversion rate remains a cause for concern as their solitary goal came from 21
attempts on goal, although coach Pep Guardiola remained unfazed.

“It will come, we would love to do more, but one day it will come and will
break everything,” AFP quoted the Spaniard as saying.

Second-placed
Porto edged closer to qualification with a 2-0 win at Marseille, inflicting the
French club’s 13th successive Champions League defeat, a run that
goes back to the 2011-12 campaign.

Defender
Leonardo Balerdi was sent off for Marseille, who now cannot qualify for the
knockout rounds.

“We have
hit rock-bottom,” Marseille coach Andre Villas-Boas.

Premier
League champions Liverpool are still not assured of a place in the last 16 as
they were at the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline at Anfield against Italian side
Atalanta, who they routed 5-0 just three weeks ago.

Josip
Ilicic put the visitors in the lead on the hour mark, with Robin Gosens scoring
the second to secure the win against a weakened Liverpool side.

“A deserved
defeat in a difficult game,” Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said.

Liverpool remain
on top of Group D with nine points, with Atalanata and Ajax occupying second
and third places respectively with seven points.

Ajax, who will
travel to Liverpool next week, defeated Danish side FC Midtjylland 3-1 at home,
with goals from Ryan Gravenberch, Noussair Mazraoui and David Neres.

Meanwhile, Inter
Milan remained at the bottom of Group B after a 2-0 home defeat to Real Madrid
and are now on the brink of elimination.

Eden Hazard
scored his first Champions League goal for Los Blancos and just his third goal overall
since his big-money move from Chelsea, converting a penalty in the seventh
minute and Arturo Vidal was sent off for Inter just before the half-time
interval as he received two yellow cards in succession for dissent.

A Rodrygo
shot went in off Achraf Hakimi in the second half to make it 2-0, and Real are
now on course to qualify from Group B after losing 3-2 at home to Shakhtar
Donetsk in their first game.

Shakhtar
lost 4-0 to Borussia Moenchengladbach, with Lars Stindl scoring a penalty and
Nico Elvedi, Breel Embolo and Oscar Wendt also on target to keep the Germans on
top of the group.
