Purdy was elevated from third string to primary backup after Trey Lance was lost for the season with a severe ankle injury on September 18. He played college football at Iowa State and was picked by the 49ers with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, making him the Mr. Irrelevant of that year. He was chosen after

San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was ruled out of the 49ers’ Week 13 game against the Miami Dolphins with a foot injury.

Purdy’s elder sister, Whitney Purdy is a softball player at Southeastern University. His younger brother Chubba Purdy became the starting quarterback at Perry before being recruited to Florida State as a dual-threat quarterback.

Purdy entered his freshman year at Iowa State in 2018 as the third string to Kyle Kempt and Zed Noland. In his four-year career, he completed 993 of 1,467 passes (67.7%) for 12,710 yards and 81 touchdowns to 33 interceptions.
