Portugal have become the centre of attention in the pre-World Cup week thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s explosive interview with Piers Morgan where he let his thoughts be known against Manchester United. A video of Ronaldo and compatriot Bruno Fernandes has been circulating on social media showing the two involved in a cold handshake as they greeted each other in the Portuguese dressing room.

Fernandes has now gone on to show that Portugal are still a force to be reckoned with even when their most successful player in history is not a part of the squad. He scored two goals in the country’s warm-up match against Nigeria ahead of their first match of the World Cup against Ghana on November 24.

Diogo Dalot, another Manchester United player, was the one who assisted Fernandes as he struck first to give the 2016 Euro champions a lead in the match.

Fernandes did not stop his exploits there. In the 35th minute of the match, Portugal were given a penalty, and the 28-year-old midfielder rose to the occasion once again. He walked up to the ball and waltzed it into the back of the net, bamboozling Nigerian goalkeeper Francis Uzoho to give Portugal a 2-0 lead:

United have not yet made clear their plans about Ronaldo, who has said manager Erik Ten Hag does not respect him, and that the feeling is mutual. He has also said that the club’s owners, the Glazer family, do not care about United’s performances, and are only interested in making money by using the club as a marketing tool.

While many think what Ronaldo said was valid criticism, others are of the opinion that CR7 deliberately went out all guns blazing in order to secure a move away from United in the January transfer window. He did try to leave in the summer, but numerous clubs, including the likes of Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich, did not want anything to do with the 37-year-old.
