It was tough luck for Team India on Sunday when they lost their first match of this T20 World Cup campaign to South Africa. It was a closely fought low-scoring game at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday. The Proteas held their nerve towards the end to chase down the 134 runs to win set by the Men in Blue.

Aiden Markram and David Miller were the architects of South Africa’s five-wicket win over India.

Earlier, Babar Azam and company thrashed Netherlands in their Super 13 Group 2 match at the Optus Stadium to get their first points in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Pakistan restricted the Dutch to just 91/9 with a superb bowling performance. Pakistan then beat them by six wickets with more than six overs to spare. Mohammed RIzwan made 49 off 39 deliveries and Shadab Khan aced it with the ball taking 3/22.

India’s loss against South Africa and Pakistan’s win against the Dutch has given Pakistan a sliver of hope for qualifying for the T20 World Cup semis. Virtually out of contention, a lot stands on outside chance and immense luck for Pakistan’s progression to the next stage of the competition.

Pakistan will now have to beat both Bangladesh and South Africa in their remaining matches and hope that India loses theirs against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. It is going to tough even if Pakistan wins both its games to rely on India losing to weaker opponents.

Pakistan’s chances will also be boosted if Scott-Edwards-led Netherlands beat the Proteas, Pakistan will have to win big to make sure that their net run-rate is more than their arch-rivals India. If the match between South Africa and Netherlands ends in a washout then it will be another way for Pakistan to qualify.
