Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz scripted history on Sunday, September 11, when he defeated Casper Ruud of Norway in the men’s singles final of the US Open 2022 in New York City. Following the victory, he has now become the youngest World no. 1 in the history of the sport.

The US Open was the first-ever Grand Slam final for the 19-year-old, who did not disappoint as he beat Casper Ruud 4-6, 6-2, 6(1)-7(7), 3-6 on Sunday. He is also the youngest men’s player to win the US Open since 1990 when Pete Sampras won it. Alcaraz also joined his compatriot Rafael Nadal as the youngest player to win a Grand Slam title since 2005.

Alcaraz began the match on a strong note, winning the first set 6-4. However, he was beaten by Ruud in the second set by 6-2. While he looked to be fatigued for some time at this stage, he made a comeback in the third set.

Alcaraz won the first two games of the third set before Ruud led 5-4. Ruud needed another win in a game to win the set, however, Alcaraz fought hard to take the set to a tie-break, which he won 7-1.

The 19-year-old also kept his winning record over Casper Ruud intact. The duo has now met three times in their career, including the US Open final on Sunday and Alcaraz has now won all of the matches. However, as the Spaniard becomes the youngest ATP no.1 in the history of the sport, Ruud is also set to finish the year with his career-best ranking (no.7).
