Carlos Alcaraz won a thrilling five-set match against Jannik Sinner at the US Open to advance to his first grand slam semifinal. It was the tournament’s latest finish ever, by nearly half an hour. 

Rafael Nadal will reclaim the top spot in the world for the ninth time if Casper Ruud loses to Karen Khachanov in the first semi-final and Carlos Alcaraz loses to Frances Tiafoe. Nadal will be disqualified if Alcaraz or Ruud triumph.

Carlos Alcaraz was born in El Palmer, Murcia, Spain. He has four siblings, including Alvaro, Sergio, and Jaime. His parents are Carlos and Virginia. At the Real Sociedad Club de Campo de Murcia, where his father oversaw the tennis academy, he first took up the sport. 

Alcaraz in 19 years old. 

Alcaraz’s father, a former top-40 player in Spain, encouraged him to take up the sport when he was just four years old. Nadal, with whom he shares a love of clay courts, and Roger Federer were his childhood idols.

In 2021, he won the NextGen ATP Finals and advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open. He has won five championships, including Masters 1000 titles in Miami and Madrid. Four of the victories came in 2022.

Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2003 Roland-Garros champion and former world No. 1, has been Alcaraz’s coach for the past two years at his Equelite Academy.

Maria Gonzalez Gimenez is Carlos Alcaraz’s rumoured girlfriend, according to HITC. Gimenez is a tennis player and is from Spain, just as Carlos. She represents the Murcia Club de Tennis and is a native of Murcia.

According to firstsportz.com, Carlos Alcaraz is worth $2 million (£1.6 million) in 2022. The Murcia-born player is currently sponsored by Nike and Babolat for his apparel and equipment, respectively, as well as becoming a brand ambassador for high-end watch company Rolex earlier this year.
