The Chicago Bears beat the Houston Texans 23-20 in week 3 of the 2022 NFL season. A closely contested game, however, it was marred with injuries as Bears running back David Montgomery was forced off the field in the middle of the first quarter after suffering an injury to his right knee.

Team doctors attended to his injury, which he picked up when his leg was rolled up in the middle of a pass play in the first quarter. While David was able to leave the field on his own, he went directly to the medical tent and then the locker room. Later, it was confirmed that he picked up injuries to his right ankle and knee.

The 25-year-old was replaced by Khalil Herbert, who put up an inspiring gameplay. He registered his first carry for 8 yards and the next two carries for 11 yards each. Herbert also scored a touchdown in the second carry.

After coming in as the replacement for Montgomery, Herbert averaged 6.4 yards per carry in the first half on Sunday against the Texans, the fourth best in the NFL this season, following D’Andre Swift (Detroit Lions), Aaron Jones (Green Bay Packers) and Clyde Edwards-Helaire (Kansas City Chiefs).

Herbert registered 20 carries for 157 yards, with an average of 7.9 yards per carry and 2 touchdowns. He has also registered 2 receptions for 12 yards in the game.

Herbert was the 217th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft. In his rookie season, he played in all games and registered 128 kickoff return yards against the Green Bay Packers in week 14 of the 2021 season, which also remains the highest in his career till now. In the last season, he recorded 103 carries for 433 rushing yards, 2 touchdowns and 650 kickoff return yards.

However, he has already equalled the number of touchdowns from his rookie season in the game against the Texans in week 3 of the 2022 NFL season. With Montgomery in his last year of contract with the Bears, Herbert could be the starting running back from now on for the Bears.

Apart from Montgomery, wide receiver Byron Pringle also suffered a calf injury against the Texans, which forced him off the field on Sunday.
