National League South game between Chippenham and Chelmsford was abandoned after centre-back Pablo Martinez collapsed mid-game. The score was 0-0.

Martinez, who was signed by Chippenham in summer of 2022, received emergency treatment. The semi-pro side tweeted that the 21-year-old ‘has been stabilised and is breathing’. 

“We can confirm that @pablojm78 has been stabilised and is breathing,” the sixth-tier English club tweeted.

“Everyone at the club would like to wish Pablo in his recovery.” The club, or any other authority has not made any official statement on the reason behind Martinez’s collapse.

Several fans on social media praised the club physio for his prompt action. 

“Thanks to our physio. Not all heroes wear capes,” one Twitter user said.

“Not a religious man but all my thoughts are with Pablo. Horrible to see. Make sure that physio gets Kudos, top man and thanks for stepping up,” another one tweeted. 

The West Bromwich Albion Football Club (West Brom) tweeted: “Wishing you a full and speedy recovery, Pablo.”

Chippenham had immediately after the incident said that players were taken back to the tunnel.  

“The players are heading back into the tunnel, as Pablo Martinez collapses in the centre circle, personnel are out immediately.” Minutes later, the match was abandoned. The club offered fans vouchers for the game, whenever it is rearranged.

“The game today has been abandoned. We wish Chippenham’s Pablo Martinez well wishes and a speedy recovery. The Chippenham announcer said that he is breathing and is being taken to hospital. We congratulate Chippenham and the NHS for a speedy response to the events this afternoon,” Chelmsford said after the match was abandoned.

A former Wales Under-17 and U-19 international, Martinez was a part of West Brom’s youth academy. He was released by the club in 2020. The centre-back took a transfer from Bristol Rovers in 2022.
