Christian McCaffrey, the San Francisco 49ers’ star running back, sustained a calf injury in the team’s recent 27-10 victory over the Washington Commanders. The injury occurred in the third quarter of the game, and McCaffrey did not return to play thereafter.
Despite the injury, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan seemed optimistic, indicating that McCaffrey was moving well on the sidelines and hoping the issue was not too severe. However, Shanahan did not confirm if McCaffrey would have been able to play in the following week had the team needed him to secure the No. 1 seed.

McCaffrey himself downplayed the severity of the injury, describing it as “pretty minor.” He emphasized that he chose not to exacerbate the injury by continuing to play, especially with uncertainty about the upcoming games.
This decision aligns with the 49ers’ recent clinching of the No. 1 seed in the NFC, following a loss by the Philadelphia Eagles, which gives Shanahan the flexibility to rest key players like McCaffrey in the final regular season game if necessary.

McCaffrey’s performance in the 2023 season has been exceptional. He accumulated 1,459 rushing yards and 564 receiving yards, with a total of 21 touchdowns. This remarkable output ties him for the most touchdowns in the league alongside Miami Dolphins’ Raheem Mostert.
McCaffrey’s contributions have been a significant factor in the 49ers’ successful season, making his health a crucial concern for the team as they prepare for the playoffs.
