With the month of November coming to a close, the Christmas season is officially about to begin. Households all over the globe will be buzzing in preparation and families will reunite with their loved ones. While decorating a Christmas tree is one of the biggest traditions of the night, someone went to great lengths to put Santa hats on statues atop a college chapel.

On Monday,  campus inmates of St John’s College in Cambridge were flabbergasted when they woke up to find tiny red hats peeking out from the tall tower of the chapel. This sparked a discussion amongst the students about the method used to make this possible and, unsurprisingly, a number of theories emerged.

A photographer, Martin Bond, the man behind the social media page ‘A Cambridge Diary’ has been capturing and sharing images of the beautiful city over the last decade. He was pleasantly surprised to see statues and gargoyles on the tower accessorized with Santa hats.

On his social media account Martin wrote, “A rascal student has placed a Santa hat on the heads of figures on St John’s College Chapel – so why is it my picture of the day? Take a look at the second picture and ask yourself – how?”

The Gothic style chapel was built inside the college campus in the 1860s. It is 163 ft high, as reported by BBC, which turns heads and explains why the task on display is extraordinary.

In conversation with BBC, Martin Bond said, “Some people believe they were placed by a drone, but they definitely climbed up there. I was told by a porter no key had been signed out, so they weren’t placed inside, it was done from the outside.”

This isn’t the first time that the institution has found items being placed on the roof. Mysterious night climbers managed to put an Austin 7 on display in 1958.
