Liverpool are on their way to sign Dutch winger Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, as per a statement issued by the latter. Gakpo had been impressive for the Dutch national team in the FIFA World Cup, which helped him sign a deal with the Merseyside club.
Liverpool were fighting with Manchester United to sign the promising winger, but as things now stand, Jurgen Klopp has beaten Erik ten Hag from landing the promising talent.
Regarding the transfer, Eindhoven said on Twitter, “PSV and @LFC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer.”
Gakpo was born on May 7, 1999. He is currently 23 years old.
Although neither club has released details of the transfer fee they have agreed upon for Gakpo, ESPN has put forward the figure £37 million after speaking to sources closely associated with the deal.
Details of the contract have not been made available yet. However, it has been confirmed that Gakpo will join Liverpool in the upcoming January transfer window. A Liverpool fan account called the Anfield Talk has said that Gakpo will likely sign a six-year deal with the club.
At PSV, Gakpo earns a salary of £19,000 per week. It is expected to significantly increase after he begins his stint with the 19-time league winners.
Cody Gakpo is a winger who impressed football fans with three three goals he scored for his national side in the FIFA World Cup 2022. His dribbling skills, speed, and ability to cut inside a more central position will help Liverpool in their counterattacks.
Gakpo was himself interested in joining Manchester United, and had made his feelings known earlier. However, it now seems that he will be heading towards playing for their eternal rivals instead.
