Indian star wrestler Anshu Malik claimed the silver medal in the final of women’s 57kg freestyle wrestling at the Commonwealth Games 2022, after she was beaten 7-3 by Odunayo Folasade Adekuoroye of Nigeria in the final on Friday, August 5. The 21-year-old also became the first Indian wrestler to win a medal at the ongoing mega event, however, several other wrestlers have also ensured a medal in their respective categories.

Anshu also helped India to win its 21st medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022, including the eighth silver medal. However, the Indian wrestling contingent is in contention to win more medals at the mega event, with Bajrang Punia, Deepak Punia and Sakshi Malik all having confirmed a medal at the event.

Anshu began her Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign on a positive note as she defeated Irene Symeonidis of Australia by technical superiority in the quarterfinal. Having qualified for the semifinal of her category, the Indian star wrestler registered another technical superiority win over Sri Lanka’s Nethmi Poruthotage in the semis and advanced to the final.

However, she could not overcome the challenge of Nigerian wrestler Odunayo Folasade Adekuoroye in the final, who beat her in a tough match, defeating Malik 7-3 on Friday.

However, despite her silver medal win, she displayed a string of memorable performances on the mat in Birmingham, winning a medal in her CWG debut. Anshu Malik was also part of the Indian wrestling contingent at the Tokyo Olympics, where she came close to winning the bronze medal, however, was beaten by Russian Olympic Committee’s (ROC) Valeria Koblova in the repechage round.

Other Indian wrestlers such as Bajrang Punia, Deepak Punia and Sakshi Malik have confirmed medals at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Meanwhile, Divya Kakran and Mohit Grewal are also in contention to win bronze medals at their respective categories mega event, should they emerge victorious in their next match.
