The 2022 edition of the multi-sport event is set to begin in Birmingham, England from July 28 and will run its course till August 8. Overview

The Commonwealth Games, popularly known as the CWG, is an international multi-sport event which is organised for athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The CWG is held every four years, beginning from 1930 and with its latest edition in 2018.

This quadrennial event was known as the British Empire Games in the first 20 years of its existence, before it was renamed as British Empire and Commonwealth Games till 1966. It was renamed twice more, as British Commonwealth Games between 1970-74, after which the organisers decided to go with the name Commonwealth Games.

The official motto of the 2022 edition of the event is, ‘Games for Everyone.’ 5054 athletes from 72 nations will be participating in the tournament across 20 disciplines in 280 events. The opening ceremony will be held on July 28 at Alexander Stadium while the closing ceremony will be organised on August 8 at the same venue.

India has announced a 215-member contingent for the event.

Venue

The Commonwealth Games 2022 will be held across three regions and 16 venues in England — Birmingham (seven venues), West Midlands Region (eight venues) and Greater London (one venue).

The most notable cities with the venues of the event include London (the capital of England), Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton. 

Events

The Commonwealth Games 2022 will include 10 core events from the previous edition in 2018, along with five new sports which will be integrated in the tournament. The 10 core sporting events are athletics, badminton, boxing, hockey, lawn bowls, netball (for women), rugby sevens, squash, swimming and weightlifting. The new sports which will be integrated in the core sports category are road cycling, judo (previously optional), triathlon, table tennis, and wrestling.
