August 6 turned out to be one of the most exciting days for the Indian contingent at the Commonwealth Games, as the country managed to clinch 12 medals to increase their tally to 40, including 13 gold. The country is currently in the fifth position on the standings, behind Australia, England, Canada and New Zealand and will be hoping to replicate its success in the last two days to finish as high as it can.

Wrestling continued to be the Indian contingent’s highlight on Saturday, as India went on to claim six medals, including three gold in Birmingham on August 6. Apart from wrestling, boxing and table tennis also claimed multiple medals while the men’s hockey team and women’s cricket team set their dates in the finals of their respective disciplines. Let’s take a look at how the ninth day at the mega event turned out for India.

Athletics and Para athletics

While Indian athletes participated in six different events in athletics and Para athletics, only Avinash Sable managed to win a medal in this discipline. He won the silver medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.

Badminton

PV Sindhu, Aakarshi Kashyap, Lakshya Sen and Srikanth Kidambi all won their singles matches in the quarterfinals and advanced to the semifinals.

The men’s and women’s doubles teams also won in their respective matches in the quarterfinals on Saturday and qualified for the semifinals.

Boxing

The combat sport turned out to be very interesting for the Indian fans on August 6. Amit Panghal, Nikhat Zareen, Sagar Ahlawat and Nitu Ghanghas qualified for the final and ensured at least a silver medal in their respective categories. However, Mohammad Hussamuddin, Jaismine Lamboria and Rohit Tokas were defeated in the semifinals and clinched the bronze medals.

Cricket

As mentioned above, the women’s cricket team qualified for the final after defeating England in the semifinals.

Hockey

The Indian men’s hockey team came one step closer to clinching their first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal as they defeated South Africa 3-2 to book a spot in the final.

Lawn bowls

The Indian men’s lawn bowl team were beaten by Northern Ireland 18-5 and bagged the silver medal on Saturday.

Squash

The Indian men’s doubles team of Abhay Singh and Senthilkumar Velavan were beaten in the quarterfinals by Malaysia. On the other hand, the mixed doubles team of Saurav Ghosal and Dipika Pallikal were also beaten by New Zealand in the semifinal.

Table tennis and Para table tennis

The Indian women’s doubles team of Sreeja Akula and Reeth Tennison began the day with a 3-0 win over Wales in the round of 16. On the other hand, Manika Batra and Diya Chitale also won in the round of 16.

Achanta Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran won in their respective singles matches in the quarter-finals. However, Sanil Shetty and Sreeja Akula fell in the quarterfinals and semifinals respectively.

Bhavina Patel and Sonalben Patel won the gold and bronze medals respectively in the Para table tennis women’s singles classes 3-5 event.

Wrestling

Ravi Kumar Dahiya, Naveen Kumar and Vinesh Phogat won gold medals in their respective categories. Meanwhile, Deepak Nehra, Pooja Sihag and Pooja Gehlot won bronze medals.
