A conversation with Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi cannot be complete until the other individual is mentioned, and Piers Morgan did just that (satisfying millions of football fans across the planet) when he asked CR7 about his feelings and opinions about his eternal rival.

When it was time to speak about Messi, Ronaldo was all smiles, and said he had immense respect for the Argentinian, alongside whom he competed for football’s top individual prizes for around 16 years.

Ronaldo used adjectives like “top” and “magical” when describing the Argentina captain. He also mentioned that Messi has always spoken well about him in public. He went on to mention that Georgina Rodríguez, Ronaldo’s partner, is also an Argentinian and that they share a warm relationship with Messi and his wife Antonella.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s exact comments were: “It’s like Messi is a teammate, He’s a guy that I really respect the way he always speaks about me…. What can I say about Messi? A good guy who does everything for football.”

The rivalry between the two has been one of the constants in the ever-changing world of sport since Ronaldo won his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 and Messi came second. The two of them have since gone on to carve out careers unlike any other in the history of the game.

Both are at the moment with their national sides in Qatar, where they will likely compete in their last World Cup tournament. Messi and Ronaldo have both played in five different editions of the World Cup, with the latter coming to the cusp of taking the cup home in 2014, a dream that was shattered thanks to an extra-time strike by Germany’s Mario Gotze.
