Cristiano Ronaldo thought he has scored his 18th FIFA World Cup goal for Portugal in the Group G match against Uruguay at the Lusail Stadium on Monday. It appeared that Ronaldo has headed home a Bruno Fernandes cross by snatching it from the goalie’s nose, but video analysis later found that Ronaldo did not touch the ball.

It was later confirmed by the fourth official that the goal will be given to Bruno Fernandez, Ronaldo’s former teammate at United.

FIFA confirmed in a tweet later that the goal has been awarded to Bruno Fernandes retweeting a previous tweet that said Ronaldo has scored the goal. It was a heartbreak for the fans at the stadium who thought that the star has scored.

However, Ronaldo’s movement played an important role in the goal as him rushing forward made the goalkeeper confused about whether to defend Ronaldo or get hold of the ball first. That confusion meant that the cross went untouched into the net without touching the goalkeeper or Ronaldo.

Fernandes scored another goal later in the match in a penalty, which was a rare occasion as it is Cristiano Ronaldo who usually steps up to take penalties for Portugal. This time, he has no issue with Fernandes taking the penalty.

There have been rumours that the relationship between Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes has gone sour since the 37-year-old left the club following an explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

A video was also circulated where Ronaldo and Fernandes met for the first time in the Portugal squad ahead of the World Cup. It was claimed that the air between the two was heated.

Ronaldo refuted the claims in a press conference saying that he was only asking Bruno why he came late.
