Australian opener David Warner received flak on Instagram when he commented “Lucky man mate” on a picture of Anushka Sharma that former Indian captain Virat Kohli shared on Instagram. One user asked the 35-year-old, “Are you jealous?”, to which he replied that this is a common saying in Australia that means someone is lucky to be with their romantic or conjugal partners, just like he is lucky to be with his wife, Candice Warner. He went on to add that the interpretation might be different.

Warner’s comment was flooded with responses where people continued to either support or question him. Things calmed down when Kohli himself replied, “I know, mate” to Warner’s comment. Check out the post right here:

Warner’s posts on Instagram often show his love for Indian culture. He earlier posted a clip from the film Pushpa where he morphed his face onto that of Allu Arjun. Warner also wished his Indian fans on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi:

This is not the first time that an Australian cricketer has been criticized for ‘apparently’ disrespecting Indian cricketing heroes. During the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG), batter Marnus Labuschagne was trolled by a section of Twitter users when he referred to Sachin Tendulkar by his first name. Tendulkar posted on Twitter to express his excitement about cricket being included in the competition, to which Labuschagne had replied, “Agreed Sachin. Aus v India is going to be an amazing opener too”.

Tendulkar’s fans quickly jumped on the Twitter thread and reminded the Australian batter that he was talking to a senior cricketer and should refer to him as “Sir”. Check out the thread here:
