Dexter Fowler, a former All-Star outfielder for the Cubs and a key member of the 2016 World Series title squad, announced his retirement on social media on Tuesday.

“It’s here. I’m hanging up my cleats,” Fowler said on Twitter. “I’m mostly proud to look back on my career knowing that I played the game the right way and did my best to make a positive impact beyond the win.”

Only two of Fowler’s 14 major league seasons were spent with the Cubs, but he was responsible for one of the most iconic events on the North Side when he became the first and only player to hit a lead-off home run in a World Series Game 7 at Progressive Field in Cleveland. In the 2016 Series, he had a.233/.258/.467 slash line. He also participated in the All-Star Game for that season.

In 2015, the Astros traded Fowler to the Cubs in exchange for Luis Valbuena and Dan Straily. Fowler turned down a mutual option after the 2016 season and became an unrestricted free agent. He ultimately decided to sign with the Cardinals.

He last played in the majors in 2021 with Anaheim.
