Shawn Kemp is set to be released from the Pierce County Jail after the District Attorney’s office said that no charges were filed on Thursday. However, the former Seattle SuperSonics star could still be charged as Tacoma PD has not completed its investigation.

Kemp was arrested near the Tacoma Mall on Wednesday night on suspicion of drive-by shooting. In a video obtained by KIRO 7 a man was seen standing next to a Porsche, which has confirmed to be the basketball player’s. The man is then seen getting into the car and speeding away. Another clip shows the man pulled over by police and being placed in handcuffs.

“I was helping a customer and I heard a couple shots, and the mail lady was coming in and she said, ‘The guy in the red vest just shot somebody. And then I ran over there and locked all my doors and started videotaping it,” a witness told KIRO.

Sources told Fox 13 that Kemp was acting out of self-defense … and he was attempting to retrieve stolen property when someone opened fire on him first.

As the police came to the scene, Kemp met with law enforcement officials. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.

Kemp played for the Seattle SuperSonics for eight seasons, where his performance made him one of the league’s most iconic players. He is known for his ability to throw down thunderous dunks. The forward was a six-time All-Star between 1992-1998 and made three All-NBA second teams.

Shawn Kemp was arrested earlier in 2005 at 35 years in Shoreline, Washington under a drug possession investigation. He was found with a small amount of cocaine and around 60 grams of marijuana, along with a semiautomatic pistol, along with another man, as reported by the Sheriff’s Office.
