The Hindu festival
of Dussehra, also known as Vijaydashami, is being celebrated across the world on
Friday. The festival marks the beginning of preparations for Diwali, one of the
most important festivals in the Hindu calendar.

The
festival of Dussehra is celebrated in different ways and for different reasons across
the subcontinent. While the eastern, southern and northeastern states of the
country mark the festival as the victory of goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasur,
it is celebrated to mark Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana,
symbolising the victory of good over evil, in the northern states.
