Manuel Lanzini’s 9th-minute strike eventually became the goal to put an end to Manchester United‘s run in the EFL Cup as West Ham United moved to the next round with a 1-0 victory over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Although a late strike from Jesse Lingard sealed the three points for the Red Devils in the game against the Hammers in the Premier League on weekend, United failed to string a similar comeback tonight.

For the cup fixture, Solskjaer opted for a heavily rotated starting lineup. In goal, Dean Henderson started for United in front of a centre-back pairing of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof. In the midfield, Juan Mata started alongside Donny van de Beek and Nemanja Matic.

Frenchman Anthony Martial was leading the forward line. Meanwhile, David Moyes made his rotations for his West Ham side too. Ryan Fredericks and Ben Johnson started as the fullback pairing while Andriy Yarmolenko and Arthur Masuaku were the two wide players.

West Ham struck early through Lanzini, who stabbed home a deflected Fredericks cross after the right-back dashed past the United defence.

It was the only shot on target West Ham had in the first half.

Although United dominated the possession throughout the game, the Red Devils failed to penetrate the West Ham defence. The Hammers’ shot-stopper Alphonse Areola made six saves in total, out of which four shots were from inside the box. Like in the game at the weekend, Jarred Bowen led the attacking line for West Ham.

This was West Ham’s first victory at Old Trafford since 2007, gaining revenge for their Premier League defeat of two days ago.  Next up, West Ham will face another Manchester club in Man City in the round of 16 of the EFL Cup.
