Kylian Mbappe put up a strong fight for France as he became the first player since 1966 to score a hattrick of goals in a FIFA World Cup final. However, it was not enough to stop Lionel Messi lifting the World Cup. After the defeat, France President Emmanuel Macron was spotted consoling the 23-year-old on the field.

Macron, who was watching the game live at Lusail Stadium, and reacting passionately throughout, made his way onto the pitch after the shootout to console French players.

Messi placed Argentina ahead from the penalty spot and played a part in Angel Di Maria’s goal that made it 2-0 after 36 minutes.

Mbappe hit two goals in a 97-second time span to take the game to extra time, then Messi scored his second goal in the 109th minute but another penalty from Mbappe took the thrilling game to a shootout.

The Paris Saint-German (PSG) teammates both scored in the shootout, but it was Argentina who won it 4-2. The result saw Argentina win their third world title while beating two-time champions France, who were aiming to become the first back-to-back winners since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

In Russia 2018, France won the World Cup title by defeating Croatia 4-2 in the final to lift the trophy for the first time since 1998.
