Mwepu, who made an impact for Brighton last season, was tragically had to retire in October 2022 at the age of 24 due to a hereditary cardiac problem. According to The Zambian Observer, he was rushed to University Teaching Hospital on Sunday morning after what is thought to have been a heart attack.

According to reports, the incident happened as he was travelling toward the town of Kabangwe, which is located outside of the country’s capital, Lusaka, and his automobile was spotted swerving on a busy route. The report only mentions that Mwepu was sent to the hospital for treatment; it makes no mention of his condition.

Mwepu ended his playing career after 169 club matches, including stints with Red Bull Salzburg and Brighton. With Salzburg, he won the Austrian first division four times, three Austrian Cups, and six goals in 23 appearances for Zambia.

If Mwepu had continued to play, his condition could have gotten worse over time. He became ill on a flight to meet up with his Zambian teammates, which revealed the problem. He spent some time in a hospital in Mali under supervision before flying back to Brighton.

It was revealed that Mwepu would go back to Brighton to coach their under-9 squad after declaring his retirement.
