Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United beat Newcastle United 2-0 to win the 2022-23 Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium, London on Sunday. This was the Dutch manager’s first trophy as Old Trafford boss and the club’s first in six years.
Casemiro put United ahead in the first half and then Sven Botman’s own goal sealed the final for Ten Hag’s men.
United last won a trophy under Jose Mourinho – the 2017 EFL Cup (Carabao trophy). Since then Ole Gunnar Solskjær (2018 to 2021), Michael Carrick (caretaker in 2021), and Ralf Rangnick (2021 to 2022) have managed the side. Ten Hag was appointed when the team was struggling.
The Dutchman, who led the dynamic Ajax team in 2017-2018, roped in Casemiro this season. He let go of Cristiano Ronaldo and established Marcus Rashford as their leading attacker. The team is now third in the Premier League race – eight points behind leaders Arsenal.
On Sunday, Casemiro started off the scoring in the first half. Rashford, five minutes later, took a deflected shot that evaded Lorius Karius to give United a strong hold over the match. It was ruled to be a Sven Botman own goal.
“It’s an amazing feeling, we’ve been searching for this moment, us, the fans, the club, finally we get our trophy, we deserve it,” Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes told Sky Sports.
“It’s been an amazing period. The first trophy of the season but we want more. It’s not enough for this club, we want more and we need more because our standards deserve more.”
