“It was an avalanche of fans who overran the gate. Some were still under the metal in the tunnel. Others managed to make it to the stands and then to the field and were smothered,” an unidentified volunteer with the Rescue Commandos first aid group told journalists, as per the Associated Press.

Authorities stated that early reports suggested a crush of spectators attempted to enter Cuscatlan Stadium in San Salvador, the capital of the Central American nation, to see a match between the clubs Alianza and FAS. The stadium gate purportedly fell, allowing fans to close together, which is when the stampede reportedly began.

Emergency services evacuated spectators from the stadium as ambulance sirens wailed and hundreds of police officers and troops were there to watch the game.

The most recent reports state that 12 individuals have since died and numerous others have been hurt. According to Fuentes, some 100 people were transported to the hospital in serious condition, some of whom had injuries like suffocation and other sorts of trauma.
