Mick Schumacher, the son of seven-tim world champion Michael Schumacher suffered a 170mph crash in qualifying two of the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix on Saturday. However, after an approximate one hour pause the session was underway. 

Schumacher, who drives for HAAS F1 team, lost control of his car on turn nine and slammed it against the inside barrier before rebounding back across. He then crashed into the concrete barrier at Turn 10, causing a red flag in the session.

The 23-year-old was concious and appeared physically fine when the medical car arrived. He was then airlifted out of the car and taken away in an ambulance to the circuit’s medical centre for checks. A helicopted took the HAAS driver to the hospital. 

“Assessment at the medical centre revealed no injuries, and he has been transferred to King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital, Jeddah, for precautionary checks,” an FIA statement said.

Schumacher’s car was in two pieces and the gearbox assembly fell off. HAAS team principal Guenther Steiner confirmed that he has no injuries.

 “I spoke with his mum and kept her updated. He has no injuries that you can see, but they want to do some scans to make sure there was no impact from the forces. The impact broke up the digital [technology] so we heard nothing [on the radio] but we got word he was conscious,” Steiner said. 

The race director was brought out to inspect the track, where the debris was cleared. 

Meanwhile, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez took pole at the Saudi Arabia GP. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were on second and third. Reigning champion Max Verstappen was fourth.
