Karim Benzema, the French footballer and the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner could be retiring from international football. The French star shared a cryptic post on his social media handles indicating that he could be hanging his boots for Les Bleus.

“I made the effort and the mistakes it took to be where I am today and I’m proud of it!” Benzema said in the post written originally in French. “I have written my story and ours is ending.”

The post has sparked off discussion as to why the French star has made the decision to step down from the French team even as he is at the peak of his footballing career. Many are suggesting that it was a fallout with manager Didier Deschamps that led to it.

The 35-year-old could be a part of the Les Bleus in the World Cup campaign after incurring a leg injury just before the Qatar World Cup. However, just before the final clash between Les Bleus and La Albiceleste, it was announced that the Real Madrid striker would available for selection if the manager wishes.

Amidst speculation that he might make an unexpected return with the French side in the final, Benzema announced on social media that he won’t be doing so. He was also invited by Emmanuel Macron, the French president, to join him in his private jet for his trip to the final, but he even rejected that.

It is being reported that the French star’s bad relationship with Didier Deschamps was the reason behind his decision.

He, however, made it a point to wish his Frenc teammates ahead of the final with a message on Twitter.

‘It’s time… all together. Vamonos. Come on Les Bleus,’ he wrote.
