Lothar Matthäus, 1990 FIFA World Cup-winning captain, was spotted watching Germany vs Spain Group E tie at the Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday. 

The two teams drew 1-1.

Lothar Matthaus is a former German football player who was the only outfield player in the world to play five World Cup finals -1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, and 1998. He captained the German side in the 1990 World Cup and led the side to victory, he was awarded the Ballon d’Or. He was a member of the 1980 European Championship-winning team. Matthaus also played in 1984, 1988, and 2000 UEFA European Championships.

He made his professional debut for Borussia Monchengladbach in 1979 and his international debut only a year later. Matthaus moved to Bayern Munich in 1984 for the first two tours 1984, with the legendary team of the German Bundesliga. With Bayern, he won five German league championships in 1985, 1987, 1994, 1997, and 1999. He also played for Inter Milan in 1988 and 1992, winning the Italian league title in 1989 and the UEFA Cup in 1991.

Matthaus was named the first FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991. He remains the only German to have received the award. In 2020, he was included in the Ballon d’Or Dream Team. He also holds the record for most World Cup matches played by a single player with 25 matches. He was named the German Footballer of the Year in 1990 and 1999.

Playing in both the midfield and defense, Matthaus was known for his fitness, intelligence, and powerful shots. He ended his club career with the New York-New Jersey MetroStars in the United States in the summer of 2000.

The same year Matthaus retired from international football, with a total of 150 appearances (83 for West Germany) in 20 years, which is the most by any German player. He is a member of the FIFA 100 list of the greatest living football player chosen by Pele.
