Osman Bukari scored a goal for Ghana in the 90th minute against Portugal and celebrated by duplicating Cristiano Ronaldo’s trademark “Siu”. Ghana and Portugal were facing off in their first game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup at stadium 974, Doha on Thursday.
While the goal helped lessen Portugal’s 2 goal lead, it failed to affect the overall result as Ronaldo and co wrapped it up, 3-2.
After 81 minutes, thanks to very profitable previous 3 mins, the tight encounter looked all but sealed with Portugal leading 3-1. However, a successful long pass culminated by a header off Osman Bukari, ensured that Ghana was still in the fight. However, with Ghana losing the match, what made more news was the Ronaldosque “siu”celebration by Bukari that made the news.

Siu refers to yes in Spanish. Ronaldo, having played for Real Madrid for 9 years (2009-18), is no stranger to either Spanish or the word. In 2014, Ronaldo reportedly uttered the word after pipping Messi to claim the Ballon d’or award in 2014. Ronaldo has won 5 ballon d’ors as opposed to Messi’s 7.
Ronaldo said in a interview in 2019 ( When he had shifted to Italy’s club Juventus) that he picked up the word while at Madrid. Ronaldo reportedly first performed the stunt nearly a decade back in 2013 while playing a friendly for Madrid against Chelsea in a pre-season friendly.
” I was in the USA, we played against Chelsea and I don’t know where this is coming from, the celebration,” said Ronaldo. ” I just scored the goal and it just came out. It was just natural, to be honest”, added Ronaldo.
While it may have started innocuously, it has become an emotion throughout the World amongst fans, amateurs and even professionals, as the incident highlights.
